Our
Philosophy
SLHF is a true non-profit
foundation created to serve the families of South Louisiana.
Our board is made of developers and philanthropists that have
a real heart to see communities created and families served
in order to reestablish the joy of our robust heritage in the
reconstruction and final completion of New Orleans.
We believe...
1.) that the the people of NOLA are a beautiful
people and that New Orleans will be reconstructed more beautiful
than before regardless of our efforts. We are facilitators with
a desire to help.
2.) that the reconstruction of NOLA should
reflect what New Orleans is through its style and types of architecture.
At a minimum
build a likeness to match. Southern and coastal type architecture
could be used with distinctive features altered to connect the
structures style; the home's styles, features, and general feeling
should link it to New Orleans historically. To be sure and regrettably,
throughout our history we have had many new styles of homes
built and some of them have been peculiar and may not have fit
the New Orleans motif. But, never have we had homes built that
have completely disregarded our culture's architectural heart
as we have here recently. We at South Louisiana Heritage Foundation
love our city's overall architecture which is unique and images
who we are to the world. The common notion we have heard is
" that messing with our architecture is like messing with
our food!." Both are beautiful and we don't need outside
help from either. We would never invite the opinions from outside
our culture to critique our grandmother's seafood gumbo. Architecture,
music, visual art, and our habits all expose our heart; they
expose OUR heart! And, this simply can't be altered. Our architectural
selections at SLHF are standardized to reflect our city's style
and beauty.
3.) that a non profit should be a non profit.
It should be stated that no one on the board receives any funds
from SLHF and they are all working board members. Also, SLHF
has an accounting method that is quite simple. There are three
categories that we assign expenditures.
a . Direct cost for house construction (Goal 80% of all revenue
raised. This percentage can rise and the bottom numbers drop
depending on donations. Our desire is to hit closer to 90% of
all revenue raised.)
b . Marketing or the cost of publicizing our organization (Goal
10% of all revenue raised.)
c . Office costs (10% of all revenue raised. This would include
office personnel and other office expenses)
How
We Help
How do we help? There are two major areas that we want to assist
communities, developmental and financial.
Developmental
As servants to the communities of New Orleans we view ourselves
as an organization that can be utilized to facilitate families
in making good decisions in these areas. Our staff is a group
of groomed professionals trained in community development. We
know how to help. When a family decides to build a home there
are many weighing questions that come to mind.
• What contractor should I use?
• From what materials should my home be made?
• How long should it take?
• What plan will suit me best?
• What style of home should I use?
• And, many many more.
We can help you answer all of these questions.
Financial
Another area that we can help communities grow with new homes
and safe homes is through financial assistance. Through the
kindness of others giving we can help fund projects and offset
expenses to families and in some cases when giving is in large
amounts new homes can be built with no cost to a family.
